The last few months of the 2019-2020 school year was fraught with reactionary decisions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing many state officials to make choices quickly and decisively without having the proper time to plan and develop appropriate systems to support its students. Shortly after the end of the school year as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts began to relax restrictions across the state, the Massachusetts’ Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) had to begin looking to the next school year as well and released a set of guidelines and opening strategies for schools to follow. In an effort to support an educational client, a classroom and building analysis was completed that looked at the guidelines from the DESE, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
